Olivers Mound Launch Meeting

by GilraenH @ 2007-12-16 - 18:13:40

A trip down to Worcestershire for the launch meeting of the Olivers Mound project proved very interesting. The morning was taken up by a trip by myself and Treasurer of the Society Rod Sproat and AOC Archaeology's Edmund Simons, who insisted on trudging through the woods! I took the opportunity to have a look at the site again (now full of nettles - ouch!).

The launch meeting for went off wonderfully. About 40 people showed up in all. Andy Boucher from
Archaeological Investigations talked through his geophysical results, the most promising ones being the resistivity results which show the areas where the 1920s excavations took place and also a very high result in an area which may contaoin another tower. Rollo Gillespie from the Earth Heritage Trust was also on hand to talk about the geology of the area and the detailed geological study that will be undertaken before the dig.

The last 2 weeks in May seem to be the preferred time of the dig, and there may be a few school visits (yikes!) and also some civil war reinactment (the woods being part of a Royalist stronghold by those under the traitor Charles Stuart ).

Whenever I see the two words 're-enactment' and 'society' side by side, why do I get the mental image of long beards, hand-rolled tobacco and Volvos ? :)

You forgot the tartan thermos and the casio watches.

Oi makes moin own chain mail, oi does... out of old Cortina wings...

I'm not being cruel. They're really like that. However, it is hugely fun to watch, especially when someone shoots themselves in the foot with a musket ball, so we shouldn't be too harsh.

I wouldn't have the patience for it. Crafting my own twine out of sheeps' testicles or living in a round-house for 3 months. Fek, no. Kudos to those who take part in experimental archaeology (you'd need the patience of a saint), but we invented central heating and cars for a reason. Smokey houses made out of dung and straw are rubbish, and mules can't do 0-60 in under 8 seconds.

Knapping flint or surfing the web on a high speed connection next to a radiator... now let me think....

:)) There's great rivalry between the groups as well. 'The Worcestershire Militia? You don't want those cowboys, you want to go with us, the Fairfax Fighters.' I kid you not. And they all hate the Sealed Knot :))

No, they're all very good. Wouldn't mind having a go myself, I could be a wench.

Studious? Wot me? Hardly. Doing something I like to do. Went to Little Witley yesterday to see a quarry, It is far too late to be a source for the mound, 19th Century probably. The quarry behind Shrawley Church has been lost due to years of churchyard rubbish. Not sure about the one with the water above, or the one at the south end of the woods. My bet is the gulley close to where the woods reach the river.hg
