Time to dust the cobwebs off my trowel...

by GilraenH @ 2007-06-17 - 12:10:33

...As I will soon become involved in my Dad's Scoiety's archaeological project at Olivers Mound in Shrawley, Worcestershire, for which they have just got HLF funding! It will be a big community dig with loads of volunteers. There are two stages to the excavations, one this autumn within the ditch rior to gaining better access to teh site and a 2 week summer excavation next year. Might even drive down my new (old) pick-up, it would be perfect for this job.

Olivers Mound is a 13th - 14th century manor house in the village of Shrawley in Worcestershire and was originally excavated in the 1920s which revealed walls and part of an octagonal tower and also evidence of late iron working.

I'm quite excited and will be blogging our progress as it happens. The first stage is a geophysical survey this summer so we can, if it picks up any anomolies, target our trenches.

look forward to reading :) It sound a little exciting, imagine what you might find. And ill lay money now that you'll excavate at least 1 old shoe/boot :DD

have fun!

An old shoe? That would be some preservation :)) I'm hoping for some walls and pottery to date the site, that would be a plus!

I've been on a couple of training digs too you know ! Hand me the surveying equipment and nineteen pints of lager. Not necessarily in that order.

If work permits, I'll grab a trowel too or drive the trucks.

Will be fun :)

Ah. but hard work I think as I haven't done any proper digging for a while and despise gardening.

But I have been going to the gym!

I'll drive the trucks and get 'me coat. I'm sure you remember the last dig we did together - Earthwatch and some random gal who decided to hate me because I have a military background.

Give me a truck and I can clear the spoil *and* the idiots who think spirits live on your shoulder and suck your life-force.

Sadly, archaeological digs attract.... I have no other way of saying this... people who have no grounding in the real world (I was going to say wackos and idiots)... mixed in with the people who have the real skills and/or the real interest.

I really would like to put some time in on this - I know your Dad won't tolerate the above, and will run it like a professional.

And, of course, it's hard work. Proper diggers play hard too - always good fun in the pub :)

Might even have Mignon the camper up and running for this...

Don't get yourself too popular lol !

Ah yes - there will be volunteers from Worcester College and the Society (average age 87) so there will certainly be a mixed bag.

Please could you keep me informed as I am editor of the Worcestershire Local History Forum Newsletter which goes out to 30 plus histroy societies and 30 plus individuals and I like to keep everyone up-to-date with excavations etc in Worcesterhire. It goes out three times a year.

I would me more than delighted to keep you informed, Anne. I'm not sure exactly when the first stage of excavations will happen, but it will be some time between September and November this year.

If you need any more information, either keep in touch with the blog, but I am e-mailing you my e-mail address to you should you wish to know more about what's going on.
